DIETER NUHR – SURROUNDED BY DISTANCES

OSTHAUS MUSEUM, HAGEN, GERMANY, 2022

In a touring art exhibition initiated by the Brost Foundation, renowned cabaret artist Dieter Nuhr presents himself as a visual artist. Artistically composed photographs reflect the world in the Ruhr region – and vice versa.

With his television show „Nuhr im Ersten,“ he recently reached around two million viewers on a regular basis, and nearly 3.5 million people watched his satirical 2021 year-in-review. On his tours, the comedian and presenter fills large venues. His intensive work as a visual artist, however, has largely flourished in private. The exhibition „Surrounded by Distances,“conceived by Nuhr in collaboration with the Brost Foundation and the Association for Art in Public, aims to change that.

It features a selection of works in which he processes his travels through nearly one hundred countries. These are juxtaposed with pieces in which the artist, born in 1960 in Wesel, explores his personal connection to the Ruhr region. From this compelling contrast emerged the idea of an international, non-commercial touring exhibition which stops in Hagen, Venice, Dakar, Rome and Koblenz.
