For many years, Nuhr has captured images of people and places during his travels and in his home region, the Ruhr area – often focusing on what remains overlooked. Through painterly and graphic reworking of his photographs, he visualizes the fading of reality into memory.
Having visited nearly one hundred countries, Nuhr has documented their landscapes, architecture, and people. Yet it is the Ruhr area—one of Europe’s largest industrial regions and Nuhr’s birthplace—that remains central to his work.
In the exhibition Surrounded by Distances, Nuhr presents the Ruhr region as a place of transformation, carrying its image into the world. The selected works juxtapose motifs from both distant countries and his native region. A unique highlight is a series of photo-based works that enter into dialogue with masterpieces from the Ludwig Collection.
