MICHAEL PATRICK KELLY – #PEACEBELL

LUDWIG MUSEUM, KOBLENZ, GERMANY, 2019

From November 2019 to January 2020, the renowned Ludwig Museum Koblenz presentedMichael Patrick Kelly’s #PeaceBell as its central exhibit. The 340 kg work of art was cast from weapon metal from the Battle of Verdun; its clapper was made from a discarded rifle. The show commemorated the centenary of the end of the First World War, documented thecasting process in impressive photographs and highlighted Kelly’s desire to ‘reforge’ hatredinto respect. The #PeaceBell in Koblenz thus became a resounding memorial againstradicalism and in favour of social cohesion.
