SURROUNDED BY DISTANCES

DIETER NUHR

In a touring exhibition initiated by the Brost Foundation and supported by the Association for Art in Public, renowned German cabaret artist Dieter Nuhr presents himself as a visual artist under the title „Surrounded by Distances.“ His artistically composed photographs reflect the world in the Ruhr region – and vice versa.

The exhibitions feature a selection of works inspired by Nuhr’s travels through nearly one hundred countries. These are juxtaposed with pieces that explore his personal connection to the Ruhr area, where he was born in Wesel in 1960. From this compelling contrast emerged the concept of an international, non-commercial touring exhibition.

Exhibition venues included the Osthaus Museum Hagen (Germany, 2022), the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice (Italy, 2022), the Musée Théodore-Monod d’Art Africain in Dakar (Senegal, 2022), the MAXXI Museum in Rome (Italy, 2023), and the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz (Germany, 2023).

The touring exhibition attracted more than 50,000 visitors and has since been followed by the successor project „Elsewhere is Everywhere,“ which will be shown at nine venues in Germany and abroad from 2024 till 2027.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Brost Foundation, all participating institutions and partners, and the artist for their dedicated commitment, which made this funded project a resounding success.
